Article: Analysis of the Current Situation in Serbia Related to the Education in the Field of Applied Artificial Intelligence

Article: Analysis of the Current Situation in Serbia Related to the Education in the Field of Applied Artificial Intelligence

The fastest growing and most exciting scientific field today is Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its real world applications. The current transformation of society and business needs for AI specialists with specific competencies and skills dictate the transformation of the Serbian educational system and its adjustment toward modern demands. This paper presents some results and analysis of conducted surveys in the scope of the Erasmus+ project “Future is in Applied Artificial Intelligence” related to the current state of AI education in Serbia, existing university AI courses, knowledge and attitude of students and teachers toward AI contents, needs of the employers and the preferred future directions of the transformation of education system toward a competency-based digital society through formulating adequate AI learning requirements.

While the use of digitalization tools and strategies in teaching and learning methods brings many benefits, progress is uneven and there is a need to improve practices in online methods, identify the “success and quality characteristics” of pedagogical practices, and help improve and inform the move towards a new paradigm educational.

In recent years, the university authorities, in particular the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, have been paying attention to the development and implementation of innovative educational technologies. As a result, VR and IoT computer rooms equipped with modern equipment were created.

On June 7-9, in Bled (Slovenia), the International Training in Digital Pedagogy organized by the European Commission took place. The training was attended by representatives of Erasmus+ National Agencies and coordinators of relevant projects.

The aim of the training “Fostering digital pedagogies through international cooperation” was to share experiences and best practices in the use of digital pedagogy to strengthen international teaching and learning activities regarding student mobility and new mobility formats, COIL, joint programs, etc.

The event lasted two days and included expert panels with discussions on relevant European policies and funding opportunities and best practice presentations, exploring methodologies, added value and relevant challenges. The conference also provided a dedicated space for lab sessions, giving attendees the opportunity to exchange ideas, start thinking, and possibly develop new design ideas together with the help of experts.

Poland was represented by a team of 5 people led by the coordinator of the Team for Partnerships in the Higher Education Office of the FRSE, Ms. Anna Bielecka, who gave a paper on “Funding opportunities under Erasmus+ for digital pedagogies”, which contributed to a serious discussion.

The University of Bielsko Biala was represented by the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Automation, prof. dr hab. Vasyl Martsenyuk, who has been coordinating Erasmus+ educational projects in recent years, including those related to digital pedagogy. Here it is worth mentioning the Erasmus+ 2022-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000088359 project entitled “The Future is in Applied Artificial Intelligence” (FAAI), coordinated by ATH and which aims to connect universities and enterprises in order to: a) fill the current gap in artificial intelligence digital skills; b) build an ecosystem of key partners in AAI; d) promote business opportunities, via AI Job Hub (https://faai.ath.edu.pl), between universities and IT companies; е) support the creation of AI education curricula.

During the laboratory session Vasyl Martsenyuk suggested the title of the pilot project “AI-pedagogy for teachers”. A team of representatives from Slovenia, Portugal, Finland and Poland worked on the preparation of the exercise project application.

Based on discussions, panels and presentations of best practices, participants gained experience in researching problems and the potential of the latest innovations in the field of education development and international cooperation.

Student competition in the field of applied artificial intelligence

Student competition in the field of applied artificial intelligence

On 16.06.2023, according to the program of UniBIT for the implementation of tasks within the project “The Future Is In Applied Artificial Intelligence” (FAAI:2022-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000088359), a competition for student projects was held at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT). The focus was on projects related to applied artificial intelligence in the field of informatics and computer science. The competition involved students from the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the departments of “Information Systems and Technologies” and “Computer Science” at ULSIT. Representatives from IBM were also invited to the event, and observed the student implementations with interest.

The student projects included theoretical or practical ideas, models, and applications in the field of applied artificial intelligence. The participants were evaluated by a three-member committee based on three main criteria: quality of the presentation, presentation skills, and project implementation quality. The most interesting student developments received special awards from the FAAI project, as well as awards from IBM and UniBIT. The special awards for the top three winners were a laptop backpack, wireless headphones, a webcam, and a wireless computer mouse. All participants also received promotional materials with information about the project.

The academic representatives of UniBIT expressed their satisfaction with the competition, and the students promised to participate with new ideas and implementations in its next edition.

“Two Wheels” Rally

“Two Wheels” Rally

The “Two Wheels” Rally is an annual university action. On June 2, 2023, the 4th edition of the event took place. It was organized by the RESET IT scientific circle actively involved in the FAAI project. This year, the rally took place in the picturesque surroundings of Bielsko-Biała and Wilkowice, where green hills, winding paths, and charming places were the background for the cycling adventure of Erasmus+ FAAI project participants.
It was not only a rally, but it was also a great opportunity to integrate and make new friends with FAAI participants, university employees, and students. In addition, at the finish line of the rally – in the “Wilczysko” scout center in Wilkowice, the organizers prepared, as usual, numerous accompanying attractions, such as a draw for the main prize for students in the form of a bicycle, an off-road game, paintball, pea soup, and sausage.

BBdays with FAAI

BBdays with FAAI

The FAAI project was presented in the form of a poster, leaflets and via direct conversations during the BB Games event, under the patronage of the Mayor of Bielsko-Biala. During this year’s edition of the festival, the finals of three esports competitions took place: BB EDU Games – for secondary and primary schools from Bielsko-Bielsko and the surrounding area, National Interschool Esports Games and TEB School Esport League for TEB technical schools from all over Poland. In addition, as part of the event at the Interdisciplinarity of Esports conference, a member of the FAAI project presented a lecture on the game development laboratory, in which he emphasized the contribution of artificial intelligence (main topic of project) to the game development process. The event was broadcast on the twitch.tv streaming platform.
